Family Strengthening
If you believe in investing in the potential of people, if you believe in the strength of local leadership, if you believe that a family is the best place for a child to grow up — then the Keeping Families Together (KFT) program is for you. We believe that developing the capacity of adults improves the lives of children. Instead of investing more money in institutions that take children out of their families, we believe in strengthening the capacity of families so they can raise their own children. We believe in keeping families together.
If you do too — then join us for a three-day training on how to use our KFT Curriculum Toolkit.
In addition to our flagship Keeping Families Together Program, in association with Alternative Care Thailand, Step Ahead has recently launched a Family Strengthening Handbook. This resource was born from studying the work of 10 different organizations doing family strengthening work in Thailand. The result is a comprehensive guide for how to strengthen families in vulnerable situations. It outlines some best practices from around Thailand that have proven to work in building the capacity of adults in order to improve outcomes for children.
We also offer a 3-day training in how to use this handbook in both English and Thai as well as a 5-day TOT for anyone wanting to be trained in how to equip others with this tool. Contact us for more information!

TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE
Trauma-Informed care provides a foundation for serving vulnerable populations with compassion and understanding. Our trauma-informed care specialists can provide half day introductory seminars or up to a 5-day transformative workshop to assist professionals in advancing their capacity to meet the needs of their clients.
This training introduces the theory and research informing trauma-informed principles and an overview of the impacts of trauma on a survivor. It identifies the key principles of a trauma-informed approach to service provision. For those providing direct care, workshops can offer skill building activities and hands-on opportunities to expand your therapeutic capacity.
TRUST BASED RELATIONAL INTERVENTION (TBRI)
Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that seeks to address the complex needs of people who have experienced traumas such as abuse and/or neglect, maltreatment, violence or exploitation. It is a caregiver-based intervention that equips direct-care professionals with knowledge and skills necessary to affect healing and recovery for survivors of trauma.
At its core, TBRI is an intervention based on connection and healing relationships. It emphasizes the importance of meeting relational and physical needs while managing fear-based behaviors that may arise. Because of their histories, it can be difficult for survivors of trauma to trust caring people in their lives, which can result in perplexing behaviors. TBRI offers practical tools for professionals, caregivers, teachers, or anyone who works with survivors of trauma, to see the “whole person” in their care and help that person reach their highest potential.
The TBRI model of care has been utilized in a variety of settings ranging from foster care and adoption, to shelter care, to schools and even detention facilities. It provides practical and versatile tools to affect positive change and healing.
CHILD SAFEGUARDING
Child Safeguarding training is important to ensure that all staff at every level of an organization feels empowered to understand risks and protect children.
Safeguarding is the process of working to protect individuals (especially children and vulnerable adults) from harm such as abuse, neglect, and exploitation. By participating in this training, organizations will learn how to promote a culture where safeguarding concerns are taken seriously, reported and addressed. This comprehensive training is offered in a 2-day workshop.
If needed, Step Ahead specialists are able to assist organizations in creating a comprehensive and suitable child safeguarding policy to fit your service needs.
FOSTER CARE
Thailand requires caregivers completing the registration process to become foster parents to attend training. Children placed in foster care may have experienced any number of hardships, including abuse and neglect. This can cause special needs requiring compassion and understanding from a skilled caregiver. Our course will introduce you to the needs of children placed in foster care and equip you with specialized skills to meet their complex needs.
This 15-hour training is offered over the course of five 3-hour sessions. Each session will focus on different topics of interest to maximize comprehension and prepare caregivers effectively.
BIBLICAL FRAMEWORK FOR CARING FOR ORPHANS, REFUGEES AND WIDOWS
This training is for churches or faith-based organizations to understand the 7 major themes woven throughout the Bible on how to care for orphans, children and families living in poverty, refugees and widows (single mothers or fathers). You will also learn how to mobilize your church members and staff to engage their communities with family strengthening resources.
Email us to find out how you can partner with community leaders to make sure children grow up in safe and nurturing families, not orphanages.
